The mission of Special Olympics Southern California is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities [mental retardation], giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. Special Olympics Healthy Athletes? Programs mission is to improve athletes ability to train and compete in Special Olympics. Healthy Athletes is designed to help Special Olympics athletes improve their health and fitness, leading to an enhanced sports experience and improved well-being. Free screenings are provided to athletes, which includes: medical exams, dental, vision, hearing, foot exams, physical therapy, and education on nutrition, skin cancer, and tobacco cessation.
